4k REVIEW

David Cronenberg's crime thriller A History of Violence (2005) was shot on 35mm film by cinematographer Peter Suschitzky using Arricam LT and Moviecam Compact cameras and originally finished on a 2k Digital Intermediate. For this Criterion Collection release, a new 4k digital restoration was created from the 35mm original camera negative and the 2k digital intermediate, supervised by director of photography Peter Suschitzky and approved by director David Cronenberg.

Presented in 1.85:1 with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 grading (supervised by colorist Greg Fisher at Company 3 in London), the transfer is encoded on a triple-layer BD-100 disc at a generous ~98 Mbps bitrate. The presentation preserves organic, finely resolved 35mm film grain while revealing noticeably sharper facial textures, fabrics, and diner interiors, with HDR delivering deeper blacks, firmer contrast, and much more natural skin tones than the older Blu-ray release.
