Do I get native 4K ULTRA HD?
Yes. Matrix, shot on Super 35, was finished photochemically, and even the VFX shots were recorded back to film. Post-production was never based on a digital intermediate. The original master is therefore fully analog. Warner Bros. had it newly scanned in 4K for the purposes of the almost-anniversary Ultra HD Blu-ray edition. Bill Pope, the film’s cinematographer, supervised the complete restoration and remastering, ensuring absolute adherence to the original artistic intent..
The UHDBD therefore comes from a native 4K master and, as we know from other releases of older, analog-finished films, this means substantially better fine detail, as well as a higher-quality definition of film grain. And importantly, thanks to HDR and WCG, UHDBD can render nuances in blacks and shadows that could get lost on the now relatively outdated Blu-ray. Likewise, the expanded color gamut of the new format can encompass a much wider palette of color shades, which benefits skin tones that were significantly suppressed during the remastering for the now aging Blu-ray, as well as other elements of scenes that 8-bit SDR simply could not cover. UHDBD is capable of reproducing almost the full color and brightness range of the analog film strip. Combined with 4K, this is an absolutely ultimate reproduction of a film that will likely never look better in digital distribution.

Do I get native 4K ULTRA HD?
Yes. Despite the fact that the second Matrix is VFX-heavy, it was finished photochemically just like the first film, without a digital intermediate. A digital intermediate was used only for one scene (the freeway chase); everything else allowed the studio, when scanning the negative, to rely on a purely analog source and thus create a new 4K master. Like the first film, it also received a new HDR grade, meaning the wider brightness and color range is based on an adjusted color palette. The Ultra HD Blu-ray therefore offers not only the most color-accurate but also the highest-quality technical presentation of the film possible—one that likely no future transfer will surpass. After all, Bill Pope, the original cinematographer of all the Matrix films, participated in the new transfer and HDR grading for the first and third films as well, and he himself confirmed that in this form the films actually look even better than they did at the time of their theatrical release.

Do I get native 4K ULTRA HD?
Yes. Information about the creation of Matrix Revolutions, which is the most VFX-heavy film in the trilogy, is scarce; however, given that the second and third Matrix films were shot concurrently, it is highly likely that the entire process worked the same way—i.e., the film was finished photochemically, without the involvement of a digital intermediate, which may have been used at most for certain sequences. Thanks to that, the studio could scan the original Super 35 negatives in 4K and create a native 4K master for the Ultra HD Blu-ray. Like the previous films, Revolutions also received a new HDR grade, resulting in better color reproduction and, of course, a wider brightness and color range. The Ultra HD Blu-ray therefore offers not only the most color-faithful but also the highest-quality technical presentation of the film possible—one that will likely not be surpassed by any future transfer. After all, Bill Pope, the original cinematographer of all the Matrix films, was involved in the new transfer and HDR grading for the first and second films as well, and he himself confirmed that in this form the films actually look even better than they did at the time of their theatrical release.

Do I get native 4K ULTRA HD?
Yes. Technically, the fourth Matrix reaches the proverbial maximum in every respect. The film was shot with digital Red cameras in the Komodo, Monstro, and Ranger lineups, with raw footage reaching staggering resolutions of 6K and even 8K. Visually, the transfer therefore has plenty to work with—also thanks to the fact that the entire film was finished in 4K. It thus has a native 4K master, which is a perfect basis for an Ultra HD presentation. Given the visually rich source material, Resurrections can be expected to be a reference-quality showcase that fully exploits home theater capabilities—both in fine detail and HDR performance—and, of course, the Dolby Atmos audio track will not lag behind either. In cinemas, the DA + 4K + HDR combination is almost impossible to achieve (certainly not in the Czech Republic), while streaming compromises both picture and (especially) sound compression. As is typical with physical media, the film has never looked better anywhere than on UHDBD, and the disc can therefore be considered the definitive presentation of the new Matrix.
