Do I get native 4K ULTRA HD?

At the time of its theatrical release, Tron: Legacy was a small technological marvel. However, fifteen years after its debut, it has naturally aged in this respect. Today's viewer won't feel this as much in the power of the visuals as in their resolution—shot on a combination of Sony CineAlta F35 and Red V-Raptor digital cameras (with the Phantom HD added in a few scenes), Tron was finished in 2K. Logically, a native 4K version cannot be created, as the master simply does not provide that resolution, and the materials do not exist in a higher resolution. The Ultra HD Blu-ray transfer can therefore only provide a 2K upsample. Even so, a slight upgrade in detail can be expected; after all, compression capabilities have improved significantly since the original Blu-ray, and there's a difference between providing an upsampled 2K with perceptually lower compression versus a downsampled 2K, as was the case with the Blu-ray.

In any case, the main star of the transfer should be HDR, as Tron: Legacy is precisely the type of film that is made for it. Before the release of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc, the studio invited the director to supervise the remastering. He oversaw the color grading and HDR mapping to ensure both would align with his vision. The capabilities of modern HDR transfers and displays might not be fully maximized by the second Tron due to its age, but a strong visual experience can still be expected in this regard. Additionally, some scenes utilize the "IMAX aspect ratio," where the image vertically expands to provide even more visual information. Tron was one of the first films to be presented this way, so it's good that the studio opted for this more "immersive" version, allowing the film to shine in all its glory on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. It's just a shame that the studio didn't use a multi-layered Ultra HD Blu-ray disc, which means the film could (once again) suffer from insufficient compression. However, this will only be noticeable to a trained eye, while everyone can enjoy the maximum potential extracted from the visual materials and the phenomenal Dolby Atmos audio.
