Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?
Although director Todd Phillips prefers working with traditional analog film, he shot War Dogs on digital cameras—specifically the Arri Alexa XT, whose 3.4K capture was downscaled to 2K during post-production and mastering. On Ultra HD Blu-ray, this is therefore an upscale that, beyond a modest resolution bump over standard Blu-ray, benefits primarily from HDR: much of the film takes place in the desert, which serves as a demanding test of specular highlights and peak brightness across large surface areas for most HDR televisions.
International reviews confirm this assessment. While the Ultra HD Blu-ray is on par with its Full HD sibling in terms of detail reproduction, its contrast handling is a notch above. Alongside specular highlights, reviews also point to improved black-level performance, giving the HDR image an added 3D pop. Overall, the UHD version is regarded as noticeably superior.
