The Avengers (Collection 1-4)

Marvel superheroes' first big-screen team-up, helmed by director Joss Whedon and cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, was shot primarily on Arri Alexa digital cameras at 2.8k resolution (supplemented by 35mm Arriflex 435 cameras and compact Canon 5D Mark II units for specific action shots). Because of the massive volume of complex visual effects crafted by ILM, full post-production took place in 2k, where the final master also topped out. For the 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray presentation, the transfer is therefore upsampled. Beyond noticeably tighter fine detail and superior HEVC compression, however, the film benefits most from Wide Color Gamut (WCG) and HDR-10: the Tesseract's energy discharges, the glowing arc reactor on Iron Man's armor, and the explosive Battle of New York all gain far greater luminance dynamics and richer colors than on standard Blu-ray. Paired with Dolby Atmos audio, this is the definitive home version of the film.

The second Avengers film was shot under cinematographer Ben Davis using upgraded Arri Alexa XT digital cameras capturing raw footage at up to 3.2k resolution (supplemented in action sequences by 6k Red Epic Dragon cameras and compact Blackmagic Pocket Cinema units). As with most VFX-heavy blockbusters of its era, however, full post-production and the rendering of thousands of CGI shots were completed in 2k, meaning the final master is upsampled for 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray. Even so, the transfer delivers visibly cleaner texture rendering and, above all, a substantial upgrade in color and luminance thanks to WCG and HDR-10: Ultron's glowing crimson eyes, lightning from Thor's hammer, Scarlet Witch's magic, and the saturated colors of the Hulkbuster-versus-Hulk showdown all boast noticeably stronger contrast and depth than on the standard Blu-ray disc. Together with Dolby Atmos sound, the UHDBD delivers the most technically accomplished presentation of the film.

Avengers: Infinity War made cinema history as the very first Hollywood feature film shot entirely on large-format Arri Alexa IMAX digital cameras (custom-modified Arri Alexa 65 units), capturing raw footage under cinematographer Trent Opaloch at a staggering 6.5k resolution. Due to thousands of extraordinarily complex visual effects shots, however, post-production and the final DI master topped out at 2k resolution, from which the image is upsampled for 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray. Thanks to the pristine, noise-free 6.5k large-format source material, fine detail remains brilliant—from the intricate textures of Thanos's face down to costumes and armor plating. Even so, the disc's biggest trump card is its deployment of WCG and HDR-10: the glowing Infinity Stones, the battle on Titan, Doctor Strange's arcane effects, and the clash in Wakanda burst with specular highlights and deep contrast that, paired with Dolby Atmos, extract the absolute maximum from the source master.

Shot back-to-back with its predecessor by the Russo brothers and cinematographer Trent Opaloch, the monumental culmination of the Infinity Saga was captured entirely on large-format Arri Alexa IMAX (Arri Alexa 65) digital cameras recording raw footage at 6.5k resolution. Given the colossal scale of visual effects work—spanning more than ten leading VFX houses worldwide—both post-production and the final DI master were completed in 2k. For its 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray presentation, the image is therefore upsampled, yet thanks to the extraordinarily clean 6.5k digital source material it delivers superb sharpness and fine detail in every frame. Crucial added value comes from Wide Color Gamut (WCG) and HDR-10: the Quantum Realm, neon-lit nighttime Tokyo, glowing portals, Mjolnir's lightning, and the epic final battle all shine with brilliant highlight delineation and rock-solid blacks. Together with the Dolby Atmos mix, this is a definitive home transfer that squeezes the absolute maximum out of the source master.
