Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?
Yes. The vast majority of Dunkirk was shot on IMAX cameras, whose 70mm film frame has a theoretical resolution of around 18K. Current digital post-production and mastering pipelines naturally cannot reach that level, so the footage was scanned at a still-staggering 8K. The remaining twenty percent of scenes—shot on 65mm film rather than IMAX—were scanned in 6K. What is more, the digital effects were also completed in 6K, even though they are kept to an absolute minimum in the film.
All of this comes together to form source material that surpasses virtually any Hollywood production in sheer visual information. Moreover, Christopher Nolan has stated that he personally supervised the creation of the Ultra HD Blu-ray, ensuring proper use of HDR on both this release and the majority of his catalog titles. Given the extraordinary quality of the analog elements from which the Ultra HD Blu-ray is sourced, it is no surprise that the disc ranks at the very top of reference-grade releases.
