Do I get native 4k ULTRA HD?

Yes. Although it is a low-budget horror film directed by a debutant who cut his teeth making YouTube videos and indie projects, it is still a Hollywood production, meaning it was backed by proper technological infrastructure. The heart of the production was the Arri Alexa 35—a digital camera with a sensor size that mimics classic 35mm film, recording at 4.6K. The raw footage was then post-produced in 4K.

However, more important than resolution in the case of Obsession is the masterclass in brightness and color management. Obsession is visually very dim, frequently taking place at night and in the shadows; its palette is heavily desaturated, making it the absolute definition of a "dark film." This is why proper HDR grading and compression are crucial, as artifacts and compression defects are far more noticeable on such visually demanding material than on "regular movies." Furthermore, Obsession is challenging in terms of lighting because several scenes were shot in front of LED video walls known as The Volume, which allow absolute control over light—enabling the cinematographer to truly push subtle lighting and shadows to the absolute maximum.

One thing is certain: Ultra HD Blu-ray is tailor-made for this kind of transfer, so Obsession will look better on this physical format than anywhere else.
