Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?
While shooting Suicide Squad, cinematographer Roman Vasyanov combined both capture technologies—shooting on 35mm motion picture film as well as digital cameras. However, digital cameras were used in only a handful of scenes, with analog film predominating. And although film stock holds far greater resolving potential, the scan—and consequently the master—topped out at 2K resolution. The transfer is therefore upscaled to Ultra HD.
As always, however, Ultra HD Blu-ray is about much more than just resolution (even though international reviews note that the UHDBD boasts substantially better film grain definition than the standard Blu-ray). You also have to factor in more efficient compression and—above all—HDR, which brings a wider color palette, higher dynamic range, and greater visual information in both specular highlights and shadow detail (along with deeper blacks). The aforementioned international reviews confirm this, praising in particular its ability to render pastel and neon colors and its superior overall contrast handling. Add in noticeably richer fine detail rendering, and we have another Ultra HD Blu-ray that makes you forget it comes from 'only' a 2K master.
