Will I get native 4K Ultra HD?
Yes. The journey of Star Trek to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray was full of dead ends. The film had been released in several versions on previous formats, and practically all of them were in some way incomplete: they either had an inferior transfer, unfinished effects (for example, effects completed in 2001 were presented in SD), or poor sound, among other issues. To release the film on UHD, the studio therefore decided to carry out a complete restoration of the archival materials. This involved cleaning up the original 35mm VistaVision negatives in 4K, as well as 65mm VFX elements scanned in 6K and 8K. These were also digitally restored to remove defects caused by poor compositing and optical transfers. The result is a new 4K master that presents the film in its best technical form to date. The cleaned-up effects sequences and the remixed ADR recordings in Dolby Atmos even surpass the film's original audiovisual presentation in cinemas. Star Trek has never looked or sounded better, and since the new transfer pushes the source materials to their technological limits — with 4K resolution and HDR grading — it is safe to say that the film is unlikely ever to look better.
