• Director's Introduction

Yes. Even the demanding 2007 restoration prepared for the trilogy's Blu-ray debut was a major achievement for its time. Nevertheless, Paramount decided to undertake a brand-new restoration, using the previous effort as a springboard. Restoration specialists painstakingly sifted through hundreds of archival boxes containing the original negatives, spending a full four thousand hours digitally repairing various analog defects, followed by another thousand hours of color grading to ensure that even in HDR, the films remained faithful to the original creative vision. As for the audio, alongside the six-channel tracks from 2007, the original mono tracks have also been restored.

In preparing this edition, all original analog materials were newly scanned, cleaned, and mastered in 4K so that this painstaking work would yield a new native 4K master. One can expect absolute fidelity to the original creative vision (after all, Coppola supervised the process), as well as the ability to reproduce the characteristics of the analog stock while making maximum use of today's technological capabilities for video presentation. Without a doubt, The Godfather has never looked better than in this 4K version, and given that such masters extract nearly the maximum from the analog source, it is safe to assume the films will never look any better.
