Do I get native 4K Ultra HD?
Season 1 details: Yes. The demands for quality TV production have increased quite a bit in recent years thanks to the existence of modern displays and new distribution methods, and digital production is now dominated by native 4k. The videogame adaptation of The Last of Us is no exception. The show was produced under the supervision of Arri Alexa Mini cameras, the rough footage of which was "only" in 3.4k, but this was enough as a sufficient technical basis for the 4k master. The entire series was therefore produced and post-produced in 4k, thanks to which we can enjoy perfect visuals, helped by the fact that in addition to native 4k mastering, TLoU was also graded directly in both major HDR variants, i.e. HDR-10 and Dolby Vision.
Season 2 details: Yes. For the second season of The Last of Us, the crew elevated the already impressive audiovisual production to another level by replacing the Arri Alexa Mini digital cameras with the more modern and technically advanced cameras from the Arri Alexa 35 series. These are cameras that emulate the classic 35mm motion picture film with their chip size, thereby visually approximating it.
The Alexa 35 records raw footage in 4.6K resolution, and the digital post-production of this material was subsequently handled in 4K. Furthermore, it was natively graded for HDR in the form of Dolby Vision. This modern technical mix virtually guarantees that if the creators did their job well—which is automatically expected from one of the biggest, most expensive, and most anticipated television projects—the resulting materials will achieve reference quality.
Consequently, one can expect nothing less from the Ultra HD Blu-ray transfer than the maximum that the format is capable of delivering. That is, a quality that will surpass all existing distribution channels, including VoD.
