Like the vast majority of modern Japanese animation, Makoto Shinkai's global anime phenomenon was created digitally at Full HD / 2k resolution, since native 4k rendering would have been prohibitively demanding for such intricately detailed hand-drawn and CG animation. Consequently, the image is upsampled for its 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray presentation. Thanks to the inherent nature of drawn and CG artwork, however, upscaling to 4k combined with more efficient HEVC compression proves far more effective than with live-action footage, yielding razor-clean, rock-solid linework and fantastic fine detail across Tokyo cityscapes and lush rural scenery. The disc's true trump card is Wide Color Gamut (WCG) and HDR-10, which are tailor-made for Shinkai's celebrated visual style of magical twilights, shimmering lens flares, and the glowing comet streaking across the night sky—elevating the presentation high above standard Blu-ray.
