Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?

Cinematographer Bradford Young shot Arrival on Arri Alexa cameras in Open Gate mode, utilizing the full 3.5K sensor resolution. The image was subsequently cropped to a 2.35:1 aspect ratio at 2.8K resolution, and the final master was completed in 2K. For its Ultra HD Blu-ray presentation, the film is therefore upscaled to UHD. Even so, international reviews (1) (2) (3) report both slightly improved fine detail rendering and greater overall sharpness. And while the film does not offer flashy visuals designed as showroom demo material—intentionally restraining its color palette—the HDR version delivers better spatial depth thanks to improved contrast and more natural color reproduction, particularly in skin tones. The HDR presentation is slightly darker than the Blu-ray, which according to the studio is an intentional choice made directly by the filmmakers. Thus, the Ultra HD Blu-ray edition more closely reflects the artistic intent—and in several scenes, the HDR is downright gorgeous.
