Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?

The first of Bourne's adventures was shot on motion picture film—specifically Super 35, whose theoretical resolution is somewhat lower than that of standard 35mm stock. The fact that this is not a 4K master, but rather a lower-resolution 2K master upscaled for the Ultra HD Blu-ray presentation, is therefore not all that surprising—the original analog elements quite possibly do not even hold enough image information to warrant a 4K master. You will not be getting a UHDBD mastered from a 4K source. International reviews (1) (2) are divided in their assessment of the transfer, though they agree on one point: compared to the original Blu-ray, which itself was none too impressive, the new presentation differs only in minor ways. Fine detail rendering and grain definition are slightly better, but on the other hand the transfer suffers from mild edge enhancement, desaturated colors, and weak luminance gradation, making for a generally underwhelming visual presentation—though that is largely down to the source material itself.

The Bourne Supremacy on 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray

• Feature film in Ultra HD (3840 x 2160)
• HDR (HDR-10)
• Aspect ratio 2.35:1
• Original audio in DTS:X
• BD-66 (dual-layer UHDBD)

Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?

The Ultra HD Blu-ray comes from an older master whose resolution stopped at 2K, making it an upscale. However, international reviews describe it as very successful and a major leap in quality over the original Blu-ray presentation. The UHDBD renders details more effectively and, above all, does a better job of conveying the characteristics of analog film stock (better-defined grain and textures, greater dynamic range), making the experience more "filmic". Reviewers also praise the improved color reproduction, which despite leaning toward cooler tones feels more "vibrant" and subjectively better than the older Full HD version. While the image naturally does not match the finest modern transfers, it likely cannot look any better than this, making the UHDBD the ultimate representation of Greengrass's film.

The Bourne Ultimatum on 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray

• Feature film in Ultra HD (3840 x 2160)
• HDR (HDR-10)
• Aspect ratio 2.35:1
• Original audio in DTS:X
• BD-66 (dual-layer UHDBD)

Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?

Just as with the second installment, the Ultra HD Blu-ray of the third film is sourced from an older master whose resolution topped out at 2K, making it an upscale. Even so, international reviews describe it as highly successful and a major leap in quality over the original Blu-ray presentation. The UHDBD handles fine detail rendering more effectively and does a better job of conveying the characteristics of analog film stock (more tightly defined grain and textures, greater dynamic range), making the experience more "filmic." Reviewers also praise the improved color reproduction, which reveals deeper color nuances and defines blacks more effectively. The film will likely never look any better.

Jason Bourne on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

• Feature film in Ultra HD (3840 x 2160)
• HDR (HDR-10)
• Aspect ratio 2.39:1
• Original audio in DTS:X
• BD-66 (dual-layer UHDBD)

Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?

Yes. Paul Greengrass is known for employing a wide variety of cameras and capture formats, and Jason Bourne is no exception. Production utilized Red cameras, both digital and analog Arri cameras, compact Blackmagic digital cameras, and Canon EOS C500 units. The primary 2.8K camera was thus supplemented by formats ranging from 2K and 4K up to 6K. Crucially, the final master was finished in 4K, meaning the Ultra HD Blu-ray delivers a native UHD presentation.

Given the chaotic visual style of Greengrass's cinematographer, international reviews note that Jason Bourne doesn't leave much room for the footage to show off visually. When the pacing slows down, however, it reveals a tangible amount of detail reproduction that goes beyond the capabilities of the already very impressive Blu-ray. Thanks to HDR, the presentation is also more richly saturated, handles skin tones better, and delivers a more natural-looking image overall. This highly accomplished transfer also offers slightly denser blacks and tighter grain definition. All in all, the UHDBD is considered a noticeable step up over the standard Blu-ray.

The Bourne Legacy on 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray

• Feature film in Ultra HD (3840 x 2160)
• HDR (HDR-10)
• Aspect ratio 2.35:1
• Original audio in DTS:X
• BD-66 (dual-layer UHDBD)

Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?

Just as with all the previous installments, this Ultra HD Blu-ray is sourced from an older master derived from analog elements whose resolution topped out at 2K. For UHDBD, the source material is therefore upscaled. Once again, however, international reviews speak of a very successful presentation that leaps miles ahead of the original Blu-ray in quality. Reviewers praise the transfer for its substantially improved fine detail rendering and better-defined colors, which impress more with their depth and luminance gradations than with heavy saturation. In terms of color rendering, the HDR pass emphasizes naturalism over a flashy look.
