Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?

Yes. Television series set in the Game of Thrones universe have always boasted striking visuals, but they were never previously mastered in native 4K. House of the Dragon holds that distinction for the first time, raising the bar for future seasons and spin-offs alike. The series was shot through the lenses of Arri Alexa 65 digital cameras—large-format cameras whose sensor size emulates 65mm film stock. Their stunning imaging characteristics are tailor-made for native Ultra HD. Moreover, the transfer benefits not only from their exceptional fine detail rendering—these cameras typically capture raw footage in 6K, which was almost certainly the case here—but also from their impressive exposure latitude, allowing HDR's strengths to shine not just in specular highlights, but also, as is frequent in this series, in the deepest shadow detail. Alongside its native 4K master, House of the Dragon was graded directly for Dolby Vision, allowing HDR to perform at its absolute peak.

House of the Dragon did not escape controversy either: some episodes were so dark that viewers complained about low brightness. However, this is a creative decision by the filmmakers that must be respected and is meant to reflect the atmosphere of the story. Importantly, such dark sequences are best reproduced by UHDBD, which alongside both standard and premium HDR offers extremely high-quality compression—something that was not true at the time of its SVoD premiere. The same can be said of the Dolby Atmos track. As always, we emphasize that the series has never looked—and still does not look—better anywhere than on this disc. A reference-grade release. We have already written about dark scenes in the context of the original GoT—read the article on why they look this way in our magazine.
