Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?
Season 1 Note: Game of Thrones was shot on 35mm motion picture film, though that applies only to the unaired pilot, which was largely reshot anyway (leaving just a handful of scenes). The reshoots, as well as subsequent episodes, were captured on Arri Alexa digital cameras recorded to HDCAM SR tape, the same format used throughout post-production. HDCAM SR is a tape-based format that records Full HD video with 4:4:4 chroma subsampling and MPEG-4 compression at a bitrate of 440 Mbps (and up to 880 Mbps). Season 1 of Game of Thrones is therefore upsampled from 1080p on Ultra HD Blu-ray, meaning the gain in fine detail rendering over the standard Blu-ray comes from both the superior HEVC compression and expanded disc capacity, as well as professional upscaling. This translates not only to an absence of compression artifacts, but also smoother color and luminance gradations via WCG, slightly crisper detail reproduction, cleaner noise handling, and far more effective rendering of specular highlights, shadow detail, and overall contrast courtesy of HDR. Because HDCAM SR captures virtually the entire dynamic range output by the camera sensor, Ultra HD Blu-ray elevates the first season of Game of Thrones above all in luminance, contrast, and color. Having viewed it firsthand, we can confirm that even though the difference in native resolution is negligible, the UHDBD edition looks substantially better than the Blu-ray, conveying the atmosphere of Westeros far more effectively.
Seasons 2–3 Note: The next two seasons were shot identically, with the key difference that footage was recorded as digital data rather than onto tape. Among other things, this allowed color grading to be performed flexibly during post-production. Otherwise, the same holds true as for Season 1—image rendering improves dramatically in luminance and color reproduction, since the 10-bit capture no longer had to be converted down to 8-bit SDR. Once again, it all translates into a richer, more immersive atmosphere. Both picture and sound quality across every episode are unquestionably superior to any previous presentation.
Season 4 - 8 information: For the remainder of the series, the creative team switched to more advanced technologies. The show began to be produced using Arri Alexa SXT Plus, XT and Mini digital cameras, whose raw 3.2K footage was stored and post-produced digitally. Occasionally, the 6K Red Epic-M Dragon camera was also used. Digital effects were finalized in 2K, as was the master. In terms of resolution, this is therefore still an upscale, but the improvement in image quality is even more significant than in the first half of the series. The show benefits not only from higher recording resolution, but also from a higher-resolution master, which naturally results in improved detail in every respect. The removal of brightness and color limitations also allows the series to handle light rendering and color gradients far more effectively; all issues such as banding present on the original Blu-ray discs are gone. Although it is not native 4K, Game of Thrones looks dramatically better in UHD, and it is clear that this is the definitive edition of this legendary series. It has never looked better and likely never will. All episodes also feature phenomenal Dolby Atmos audio.
