Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?
Jurassic Park – Yes. Jurassic Park was, of course, shot on analog 35mm motion picture film. Only the CGI shots were processed digitally, rendered at 2K resolution and subsequently recorded back onto film stock; those shots will naturally look slightly softer in detail reproduction compared to the rest of the footage. Regardless, the original camera negatives were restored and scanned in 4K for the recent 3D theatrical re-release, accompanied by a new color grade supervised by Spielberg himself to match his original vision as closely as possible. That master serves as the basis for the Ultra HD Blu-ray transfer, complete with a new HDR pass and audio remixed into DTS:X.
The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III — Yes. Universal has confirmed that alongside the new master created for the 3D re-release of Jurassic Park, it also produced brand-new masters for the other two installments. Like Spielberg's original, both sequels were made before the era of Digital Intermediates (DI). Consequently, both films were finished photochemically, with visual effects sequences recorded directly onto film stock. The studio therefore cleaned the original negatives, scanned them in 4K, and performed a new HDR color grade. Because the 4K scan comes directly from the 35mm negative and HDR gives the new master an expansive color and luminance range, the films benefit from far more than just substantially improved fine detail rendering and color. Alongside the live-action scenes, the VFX-heavy sequences are also given a new lease on life—whereas the limited gamut of the Blu-ray transfers did the digital effects no favors, HDR allows the UHDBD to approximate 35mm film closely enough that it paradoxically enhances the three-dimensionality and realism of the VFX. Above all, there is no doubt that the Jurassic Park films will never receive a better presentation than UHD with HDR; this is the ultimate home video transfer.
