Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?
Yes. As has become standard for Christopher Nolan, he shot his latest feature on a combination of IMAX (15-perf 70mm) and 5-perf 65mm motion picture film. The advantage of his commitment to analog filmmaking is that we get the absolute pinnacle of resolution: the theoretical resolution of IMAX frames is estimated at 16K to 18K, easily surpassing any digital camera in existence. And while standard 65mm is smaller in frame area, its analog resolution equivalent still far exceeds anything modern digital sensors can capture. Unsurprisingly, when it comes to fine detail rendering and sharpness, Oppenheimer delivers the absolute peak of what the Ultra HD Blu-ray format can achieve—a native 4K master derived from such extraordinary source elements could offer nothing less.
What you cannot expect from Nolan, on the other hand, are wild experiments with HDR or the audio mix. Nolan grades his films within a luminance range closer to SDR and mixes them in classic six-channel configurations, so object-based audio like Dolby Atmos is not on the menu. Even so, setting aside exclusive 70mm IMAX screenings in Prague, it is clear that the film has looked better almost nowhere else than on UHDBD. The format's ability to deliver pristine 4K fine detail rendering alongside an expanded color and luminance range remains unmatched by the vast majority of movie theaters.
