Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?
In recent Marvel films, Disney has increasingly flirted with shooting its blockbusters in special formats for IMAX theaters (and Disney+ streaming), which in practice means using large-format Arri Alexa LF digital cameras in an IMAX modification. These cameras feature a massive sensor equivalent to 65mm motion picture film. And although all footage from these cameras ultimately converged onto a 2K master due to the heavy VFX demands of digital production, even that master benefits from the quality these cameras deliver: the footage has a greater sense of detail, the large-format sensor gives the image a grander feel, it has wide exposure latitude, and so on. Thus, even a 2K master upsampled to Ultra HD is miles ahead of a standard Blu-ray, as it extracts the absolute maximum from the source material. Not to mention that such effects-heavy Marvel movies and films with fantasy worlds and abundant digital effects will always look better primarily thanks to HDR, whose capabilities cannot be matched not only by SDR Blu-ray, but in fact even by theatrical presentations.
