Do I get native 4K Ultra HD?

Season 1 information: Game of Thrones was shot on 35mm film, but this only applies to the unaired pilot episode, which was also largely reshot (only a few scenes remained). The reshoots, as well as the filming of later episodes, were carried out under the supervision of Arri Alexa digital cameras, whose output was recorded onto HDCAM SR. Post-production was also completed in the same format. HDCAM SR is a tape-based technology capable of recording a Full HD signal with 4:4:4 chroma subsampling and MPEG-4 compression at a bitrate of 440 Mbps (or even up to 880 Mbps). Season 1 of Game of Thrones on Ultra HD Blu-ray is therefore upscaled from 1080p, and the improvement over the standard Blu-ray lies in finer detail made possible by superior HEVC compression and larger disc capacity, as well as professional upscaling. This means not only the absence of compression artifacts, but also smoother color and brightness gradients thanks to WCG, slightly improved detail rendering, reduced noise, and more effective handling of highlights, shadow detail, and contrast in general due to HDR. HDCAM SR is capable of capturing virtually the entire dynamic range of the camera sensor output, so the Ultra HD Blu-ray edition primarily improves Season 1 in terms of brightness, contrast, and color reproduction. After personal viewing, we can confirm that although the difference in native resolution is minimal, the UHDBD version looks substantially better than the standard Blu-ray and conveys the atmosphere of Westeros far more effectively through this new transfer.

Season 2 - 3 information: The next two seasons were filmed in an identical manner, except that the footage was no longer stored on tapes but digitally. Among other things, this allowed color grading to be adjusted later during post-production. Otherwise, the same applies as with Season 1 – image quality improves mainly in brightness and color presentation, because the 10-bit recording no longer had to be converted into 8-bit SDR. Again, it is primarily about achieving a richer atmosphere. Both picture and sound quality across all episodes are unquestionably superior to any previous presentation.

Season 4 - 8 information: For the remainder of the series, the creative team switched to more advanced technologies. The show began to be produced using Arri Alexa SXT Plus, XT and Mini digital cameras, whose raw 3.2K footage was stored and post-produced digitally. Occasionally, the 6K Red Epic-M Dragon camera was also used. Digital effects were finalized in 2K, as was the master. In terms of resolution, this is therefore still an upscale, but the improvement in image quality is even more significant than in the first half of the series. The show benefits not only from higher recording resolution, but also from a higher-resolution master, which naturally results in improved detail in every respect. The removal of brightness and color limitations also allows the series to handle light rendering and color gradients far more effectively; all issues such as banding present on the original Blu-ray discs are gone. Although it is not native 4K, Game of Thrones looks dramatically better in UHD, and it is clear that this is the definitive edition of this legendary series. It has never looked better and likely never will. All episodes also feature phenomenal Dolby Atmos audio.
