Do I get native 4K Ultra HD?
Yes. Troy was produced using a somewhat hybrid approach. The film was shot on classic 35mm film, but the subsequent post-production was handled entirely digitally, completed only in 2K (which was the industry standard at the time). Fortunately, the studio did not return to that legacy 2K master for this release. Instead, they went back to the original negatives, which were fully restored, newly scanned in 4K, and subsequently remastered. As a result, we are getting a brand-new 4K master—meaning a completely native Ultra HD Blu-ray transfer.
What we can expect is a truly dramatic upgrade over the original Blu-ray release, which received very little care and looked poor even for its time. Because the premium boutique label Arrow Video took this title under its wing, we can anticipate that both the complete restoration from the 35mm analog elements and the subsequent 4K mastering will look absolutely phenomenal. We also expect top-tier Ultra HD Blu-ray authoring, as Arrow is widely renowned for their technical precision and flawless disk encoding.
The film is thus presented in its highest possible quality, dramatically surpassing what audiences saw in theaters. While Troy hit the silver screen back then via a 2K digital intermediate, we are now getting it on Ultra HD Blu-ray in native 4K. This extracts the absolute maximum from the original 35mm film stock—not only in terms of sharpness, fine detail, film grain structure, and organic analog characteristics, but also in terms of contrast and color, which will look better than ever thanks to HDR. It is safe to say that the film has never looked this good, and realistically, it never will look any better, as a 4K scan captures virtually all the audiovisual information the 35mm elements have to offer.
