The Shallows (2016), directed by: Jaume Collet-Serra

Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?

The Shallows was shot on several types of Arri Alexa digital cameras, complemented by footage from a Red Epic Dragon and occasional brief cutaways from a GoPro Hero 4. The source material thus ranges between 4K, 3.4K, and 2K, though all of it was converted to 2K for post-production. Yet even though the master is not 4K, the Ultra HD Blu-ray earned almost exclusively perfect scores in international reviews (1) (2) (3).

Reviews highlight improved fine detail rendering over the Blu-ray and, above all, vastly superior handling of both contrast and the color palette. From the several scenes we viewed on a Samsung reference setup, we can confirm that next to the UHDBD, the standard Blu-ray looks almost black-and-white by comparison. Color density and saturation are fundamentally better in UHD while still maintaining a natural presentation. Contrast is also improved, making nature and texture rendering look all the more natural—not to mention the superb specular highlights resulting from convincing HDR grading. All in all, The Shallows looks substantially better on UHDBD than on standard BD, despite being a 2K upscale.
