Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?

Yes. Predator was naturally made before the era of digital masters, when films were finished photochemically. Its original elements are preserved on 35mm film stock, with optical effects composited directly onto film (meaning those shots will understandably appear slightly softer in resolution). For Predator's 30th anniversary, 20th Century Fox pulled the original camera negatives from the archives and newly scanned them in 4K. The Ultra HD Blu-ray is therefore sourced from native 4K, and as is always the case with analog catalog titles, the film will never be available in higher quality than UHD with HDR.

Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?

Yes. The second Predator was shot on 35mm film at a time when films were still being post-produced photochemically. So there was no digital print interference and any digital tricks were imprinted directly onto the film stock. This allowed the studio to access the original negatives, scan them for the Ultra HD Blu-ray presentation, and create a native 4k master. The transfer thus bears the hallmarks of a classic analogue presentation, including relatively coarse film grain. Foreign reviews praise it and agree that the second Predator has never looked better.

Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?

Predators is one of the relatively few films shot on Panavision Genesis digital cameras, which record natively in Full HD. While the raw footage was captured in 1080p, the working master was bumped up to 2K, which subsequently served as the source for the Ultra HD Blu-ray. This is therefore an upscale—and from Full HD at that. Consequently, the advantages over the standard Blu-ray can only be modest: alongside superior compression, which in theory can yield slightly sharper fine detail rendering, the UHD presentation benefits primarily from a deeper color space, improved shadow detail, and better handling of both specular highlights and lower tones overall. At the same time, upsampling may slightly accentuate chroma noise. Clearly, the main strength of the new transfer is HDR, which promises better luminance and contrast performance.
