Do I get native 4k ULTRA HD?
Episode I was still shot on 35mm motion picture film, but the sheer volume of digital effects and post-production processing applied to the analog footage (such as DNR) resulted in a 2k master that is upsampled for UHDBD. The same applies to Episodes II and III, which were shot entirely digitally—ranking among the very first feature films in history made this way. Because raw HDCAM capture for those installments maxed out at 1080p, their masters are upsampled more heavily than typical 2k sources. Given that HDCAM-SR features 10-bit color depth, it is safe to say that the UHDBD extracts the maximum visual information from the original masters in terms of both resolution and color; in fact, for Episodes I through III, it maps those colors into an HDR space for which the original digital capture was never designed, which in extreme cases can lead to minor shifts in the color palette. Regardless, as usual, the UHDBD wrings the absolute maximum from the source elements—it will simply never be possible to extract any more from these digital masters. Moreover, every episode has been outfitted with Dolby Atmos audio—meaning the discs extract the maximum from the films in the sound department as well.
