Do I get native 4k ULTRA HD?
Yes. Episodes IV–VI were shot entirely on analog film stock, specifically 35mm motion picture film. Wherever digital alterations were introduced (such as for the 1997 Special Editions or subsequent tweaks for the Blu-ray release), that work was done in 2k, but only within those specific shots and sequences. Naturally, the original camera negatives were preserved, thoroughly restored multiple times, and subsequently scanned in 4k. The Ultra HD Blu-ray can therefore draw from a native 4k master which, thanks to modern compression methods, delivers an unprecedented level of sharpness and fine detail rendering that squeezes the absolute maximum out of the original 35mm strips. Moreover, through HDR and WCG, the transfer comes close to a complete reproduction of all the visual information captured on celluloid. Consequently, the UHDBD stands as the definitive transfer—looking even better than it did in theaters decades ago, and because it exploits the source elements almost to their theoretical limit, ensuring the films will never look any better. Moreover, every episode has been outfitted with Dolby Atmos audio—meaning the discs extract the maximum from the films in the sound department as well.
