Given its age, it comes as no surprise that The Karate Kid was shot on classic 35mm motion picture film and finished photochemically, without a Digital Intermediate (DI) phase like modern productions. This allowed the studio to return to the original camera negatives, restore them, scan them in 4k, and create a brand-new 4k master. This process yields the maximum amount of image data native to the analog original, accurately representing film grain while presenting the movie in a quality that surpasses even its original theatrical run. Combined with the UHD format's ability to extract wider color gamuts and high dynamic range via WCG and HDR technologies, it is clear that The Karate Kid has never looked better—and likely never will.
