Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?
Although Venom: Let There Be Carnage (like its predecessor) comes from 'only' a 2K master, the capture technology behind it is so advanced that you can still expect nothing short of a near-reference spectacle. Venom was shot with an IMAX-friendly 1.85:1 aspect ratio through the lenses of the Arri Alexa 65 digital camera (supplemented in select shots by the smaller Alexa Mini). As we know from many native 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray presentations, the Alexa 65 is the digital equivalent of 65mm film stock, and its massive sensor captures high-resolution imagery with phenomenal fine detail rendering. For the sequel, it recorded at 4.5K and 6.5K, making the raw elements extraordinarily rich in visual information that the 2K master can exploit to the fullest—so much so that the UHD upscale looks almost like native 4K. What is more, the second Venom is even darker than the first (not so much in tone as in the sheer number of nighttime scenes), making it an ideal showcase for testing the lower limits of HDR shadow detail—SDR simply cannot render nighttime sequences with the same three-dimensionality as proper HDR backed by WCG. In short, the second Venom is an audiovisual powerhouse regardless of its theatrical master's resolution.
