* There are currently three cuts of the film. The original 1977 cut runs 135 minutes. The 1980 Special Edition is the film as Steven Spielberg himself intended it, without studio interference, and runs 132 minutes. The 1998 Director’s Cut runs 137 minutes and is essentially a studio cut.

Do I get native 4K Ultra HD?

Yes. Close Encounters of the Third Kind was shot on analog 35mm film (with some effects shots created on 70mm). For the film’s 40th anniversary, the studio completely restored the original negative — chemically treated, digitally repaired, and then mastered in 4K. The Ultra HD Blu-ray master is therefore native Ultra HD.
