Will I get native 4K Ultra HD? Yes. James Wan knows how to shoot his low-budget horrors very economically, which among other things means a relatively small amount of digital effects. Thanks to this, a native 4K master is not as computationally demanding, and the filmmaker can afford it even on a relatively non-mainstream production. Malignant was shot through the lenses of Arri Alexa SXT cameras, with raw footage recorded in 3.4K and subsequently finished onto a native 4K master. While the UHDBD is therefore technically an upsample to some extent, it is indistinguishable from pure native 4K. Moreover, even more than from resolution, the film on UHDBD benefits from superior compression, which handles dark scenes and any noise present in them much better than Blu-ray, as well as from HDR, which in combination with WCG and compression delivers tighter, clearer, and visually more pleasing detail in precisely those scenes most plunged into darkness. It is therefore abundantly clear that Malignant benefits tremendously from being on UHDBD and that this disc is the best possible distribution method—the film has never looked better anywhere, and since the master extracts the maximum from the source materials, it never will.
