Do I get native 4k ULTRA HD?
Yes. For many of this year's titles, we've used the phrase "reference quality," as the level of production and post-production technology has advanced so far in recent years that we are getting a proverbial pinnacle of audiovisual quality with every other film. For the new Superman, however, this is especially true. James Gunn is a highly visual storyteller and often introduces subtle innovations in his cinematography (non-standard lenses, previously unseen camera acrobatics thanks to new mounting methods, etc.). This, of course, is also tied to his choice of the most modern equipment for his films.
For Superman, the choice fell to the Red Komodo and Red V-Raptor (supplemented by the Phantom Flex4K-GS, but only for high-speed shots, i.e., extreme slow-motion). The raw footage was recorded in 8K and 6K, a resolution that was unheard of for blockbusters until recently, which naturally provides more than enough visual information for extremely high-quality 4K post-production, grading, and mastering. If we add that Gunn's films are full of saturated color tones and scenes with striking brightness, which allows HDR and WCG, as well as sharpness and detail, to truly shine; plus the fact that Warner Bros. isn't skimping on space and has placed the film on a triple-layer Ultra HD Blu-ray, meaning it won't have issues with compression, one can expect nothing less than absolute reference quality. This quality will clearly surpass most theatrical projections, as well as other distribution methods like VoD. Nothing less than the absolute pinnacle can be expected from this disc.
