Do I get native 4K Ultra HD?
Yes. Steven Spielberg is, of course, a fan of analog material and postproduction. The original 35mm footage of *War of the Worlds* was completed photochemically, and a digital intermediate was used only for scenes involving VFX. Thanks to that, the studio was able to return to the original film negatives for the re-release, scan them in 4K, and create a native 4K master. Only the VFX-heavy shots remain in 2K. As a result, most of the film benefits from a significant increase in fine detail and sharpness, further enhanced by improved compression and expanded brightness and color ranges – the movie is presented not only in standard HDR-10, but also in Dolby Vision, with an added Dolby Atmos remix. Thanks to all of this, the Ultra HD Blu-ray utilizes the source materials to their fullest potential – and it's safe to say the film has never looked better… and likely never will.
