Will I get native 4K Ultra HD? (Films 1–4)

Yes. Warner Bros. decided to take a strange strategy when releasing Harry Potter on UHDBD, releasing the second four episodes on the format first. There was talk that the first four were not yet ready for UHD and would have to undergo a complete remastering, as their visuals were not convincing (as evidenced by the quality of the previous Blu-rays). Therefore, the studio made new scans of the original negatives (all episodes were shot on 35mm film) and although the VFX were rendered in 2k, the master of the new transfer has been upscaled to 4k, making the Ultra HD Blu-ray capable of exploiting the full potential of the filmstrip. This refresh makes for a huge qualitative leap for the first four volumes, which reviewers praise in terms of detail level, sharpness, colour rendition and contrast work. The original Blu-rays are incomparable next to the new transfers, according to them.

Will I get native 4K Ultra HD? (Films 5–8)

The fifth through eighth Harry Potter films were shot on 35mm film. The original negatives were scanned, while the subsequent digital post-production was completed in 2K. For the Ultra HD Blu-ray release, the master was therefore upscaled from this lower-resolution source. As a result, the new transfer does not deliver a dramatic increase in fine image detail (although a noticeable improvement is still present). According to international reviews, the greatest benefit comes from HDR. The HDR grading primarily focuses on darker tones, reducing the overall brightness while introducing richer black levels. The presentation is therefore darker, but reportedly separates objects much more effectively thanks to improved contrast. Although colour saturation has not been significantly increased, colours appear better defined. The cinematography of the later films is intentionally heavily desaturated and emphasizes darkness, and the HDR pass faithfully preserves this artistic intent. In addition, the films were newly remixed in DTS:X.
