Do I get native 4K Ultra HD?
Yes. The Shining was of course originally shot on analog cameras. This allowed the studio to return to the archives, retrieve the original 35 mm negatives, restore them, and then scan them in 4K to create a native 4K master. Director Steven Spielberg, together with Leon Vitali, Kubrick’s personal assistant, supervised the restoration to ensure the most faithful reproduction possible.
The Ultra HD Blu-ray thus offers a significant increase in resolution and detail compared to all previous releases of the film. Thanks to Ultra HD resolution, high-quality HEVC compression, and HDR and WCG capabilities that fully exploit the brightness and color range of the analog sources, this edition represents the definitive audiovisual version of the film — one that didn’t look this good even at its theatrical release and will most likely never look better.
