Will I get native 4k Ultra HD?
Yes. All installments of Back to the Future were shot before digital intermediates were used in post-production. The film was therefore captured on traditional analog 35mm motion picture film and finished photochemically—except, of course, for scenes that required some form of digital effects.
As we know, 35mm motion picture film can hold visual information corresponding to a theoretical resolution of around 6K or higher. Thanks to this, the studio can rely on a generous reserve of image detail when restoring the original camera negatives.
This was utilized during scanning and subsequent digital cleanup and restoration, through which all three installments of the legendary sci-fi trilogy were preserved on new 4K digital masters. The UHDBD thus benefits from a native 4K presentation, backed not only by an increase in fine detail rendering, but also by a deeper luminance and color gamut. This combination of modern video technologies (HDR and WCG) ensures that the films look better on UHDBD than ever before—including their original theatrical runs. Thanks to this new transfer, we can enjoy Back to the Future in higher quality than audiences did in theaters years ago, and it is highly likely the films will never look any better.
